Wizz Air, a renowned European airline, has recently announced their decision to equip up to 177 of their Airbus A321neos with engines from Pratt & Whitney. The news was unveiled at the prestigious Paris Air Show on June 17, 2025, where both József Váradi, the CEO of Wizz Air, and Rick Deurloo, the Commercial Engines President of Pratt & Whitney, expressed their satisfaction with their longstanding partnership.
Despite intense competition, with CFM International also vying for the sought-after contract, Wizz Air opted to continue their collaboration with Pratt & Whitney. This move comes as Wizz Air faces the challenge of grounding significant portions of their existing fleet for unexpected maintenance on their current Pratt & Whitney engines.
This isn't the first time Wizz Air has chosen Pratt & Whitney, as they had previously selected the company's GTF engine to power 276 Airbus A320neo, A321neo, and A321XLR aircraft in 2016 and 2020. With the addition of the Pratt & Whitney PW1100G-JM geared turbofan (GTF) engines, Wizz Air's total order now stands at an impressive 453 aircraft all powered by GTF engines.
Váradi shared his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, "Our collaboration with Pratt & Whitney has been crucial in supporting our ambitious growth plans, aiming to expand our fleet to 500 aircraft within the next decade. The GTF engine technology not only provides exceptional fuel efficiency but also delivers quieter and more environmentally friendly flights for our passengers, contributing to a more cost-effective operation for the airline."
Pratt & Whitney has been a longstanding partner for Wizz Air, having powered their fleet of 163 A320neo family aircraft with GTF engines, as well as 73 A320ceo family aircraft with IAE V2500 engines. Deurloo expressed his satisfaction with the continued collaboration, emphasizing the exceptional fuel efficiency delivered by their GTF engines, stating, "This marks another significant milestone in our enduring partnership with Wizz Air, showcasing their confidence in the GTF engine technology. Since 2003, Pratt & Whitney has been the sole engine provider for Wizz Air, and we are committed to delivering the most fuel-efficient solutions available in the market."
The ongoing collaboration between Wizz Air and Pratt & Whitney highlights the commitment to innovation, sustainability, and delivering top-notch performance in the aviation industry.
